Hard-to-Manipulate VCG-Based Auctions

چکیده
Mechanism design provides a framework to solve distributed optimization problems in systems of self-interested agents. The combinatorial auction is one such problem, in which there is a set of discrete items to allocate to agents. Unfortunately, recent results suggest that it is impossible to implement reasonable approximations without losing robustness to manipulation. Furthermore, the Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) mechanism is known to be vulnerable to manipulation when agents can bid under multiple false names. In this paper we relax incentive constraints and require only that useful manipulation be NP-hard. We prove that any tractable approximation algorithm can be made to produce a hard-to-manipulate (VCG-based) mechanism, providing a useful counterpoint to these negative results. We also show that falsename bid manipulation in the VCG is NP-hard. ∗Harvard College, [email protected] †Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Harvard University, [email protected]

Methods for Boosting Revenue in Combinatorial Auctions
We study the recognized open problem of designing revenuemaximizing combinatorial auctions. It is unsolved even for two bidders and two items for sale. Rather than pursuing the pure economic approach of attempting to characterize the optimal auction, we explore techniques for automatically modifying existing mechanisms in a way that increase expected revenue. We introduce a general family of au...
متن کاملWorst-case optimal redistribution of VCG payments in heterogeneous-item auctions with unit demand
Many important problems in multiagent systems involve the allocation of multiple resources among the agents. For resource allocation problems, the well-known VCG mechanism satisfies a list of desired properties, including efficiency, strategy-proofness, individual rationality, and the non-deficit property. However, VCG is generally not budget-balanced. Under VCG, agents pay the VCG payments, wh...
متن کاملValuation Compressions in VCG-Based Combinatorial Auctions
The focus of classic mechanism design has been on truthful direct-revelation mechanisms. In the context of combinatorial auctions the truthful direct-revelation mechanism that maximizes social welfare is the VCG mechanism. For many valuation spaces computing the allocation and payments of the VCG mechanism, however, is a computationally hard problem. We thus study the performance of the VCG mec...
متن کاملAn Approach to VCG-like Approximate Allocation and Pricing for Large-scale Multi-unit Combinatorial Auctions
A multi-unit combinatorial auction is a combinatorial auction that has some items that can be seen as indistinguishable. Although the mechanism can be applied to dynamic electricity auctions and various purposes, it is difficult to apply to large-scale auction problems due to its computational intractability. In this paper, I present an idea and an analysis about an approximate allocation and p...
متن کاملX VCG Auctions with Reserve Prices: Lazy or Eager
VCG auctions with reserve prices are practical simple auctions with provably approximately optimal revenue, and have been crucial in the analysis of other appealing auctions. When different reserve prices are applied to different bidders, the auctioneer may choose to apply the reserves either before (eagerly) or after (lazily) the comparison of bids. Both auction forms have been studied in vari...
